Introduction
On Saturday 13 March, Roca One Day Design Challenge held its fifth edition in Portugal, this year with a special online format due to the current health situation. Over 300 participants were challenged to redesign the urinal so that it can be safely and hygienically used by any citizen regardless of age or gender.
After reviewing all entries, the jury decided to select Up&Down as the winner of Roca One Day Design Challenge 2021, awarding it the first prize and 2000€. The jury praised the project for ensuring hygiene and cleanliness, original and functional form and for being adaptable to each person. It was an idea of Sofia Vasco, who holds a degree in fine arts and studies at the Lisbon School of Design, and Beatriz Filipe, a student at Faculdade de Belas-Artes, Universidade de Lisboa.
The second prize, worth 1500€, was awarded to Wavy by João Barrulas and João Marques, both students at Universidade de Évora. The jury chose this project because of its design potential, for being original and adaptable whilst guaranteeing the quality of the pieces.
The project Peefree, created by Vitória Melo Alves (Faculdade de Arquitetura da Universidade de Lisboa) and Luís Coutinho (Instituto Superior Técnico) was awarded with the third prize (1000€). The jury highlighted its finish and versatile function, as well as its ergonomic, adaptable shape and its sustainable and innovative character.
