Spain 12th Edition

Saturday 5th October 2024

Objective: Designing innovative concepts for bathroom-related products.

Topic: The specific brief for the object to be designed will be announced on Saturday, 5th October 2024.

Context: The challenge aims to involve the community of young designers in the research for original and innovative yet simple solutions, which improve the user’s interaction with bathroom products, for both private and public spaces.

On the other hand, Roca One Day Design Challenge serves as a platform to promote, facilitate and develop creativity in a display of fast and intensive work focused on bathrooms and kitchens, areas that are traditionally not the subject of a great deal of innovation.

Format: Roca One Day Design Challenge Spain 2024 will be celebrated as an hybrid (on-site, online) event. Participants can work remotely or on the spaces destined for the challenge in Roca Madrid Gallery and Roca Barcelona Gallery. Upon registration, participants must choose one Gallery, even if they decide to participate remotely later. The maximum capacity of each Gallery will be 200 contestants.

The organizing committee reserves the right to increase or reduce the capacity and to cancel the event at any time, should the health situation require it.

Enrolment: Participants can register at www.onedaydesignchallenge.net until 11:59 p.m. (UTC+2) on 3rd October 2024.

Once the number of 200 registered participants in each Gallery is achieved, the registration period will be closed, regardless of the date.

When registering, participants should include the following information and documentation:

  • Name and surname/s.
  • School or company.
  • Address (street number, town/city and postal code).
  • Contact telephone number and e-mail.
  • Date of birth.

To register, participants registering through the official Roca page www. onedaydesignchallenge.net should upload all the required information/documents before 11:59 p.m. (UTC+2) on 3rd October 2024.

Any registration submitted without any of the above information shall be null and void.

Only one registration per person can be accepted and, once the registration number has been confirmed, it can no longer be changed. Duplicated registrations by the same person will also be considered null and void.

This competition is aimed at students and young professionals living within the territory of Spain, between 18 and 29 years old on the day of the competition (both ages included), it is people who were born on or after the 6th October 1994 until the 5th October 2006.

Participants can take part individually or in groups of up to 2 members, on the condition that all of the members meet the aforementioned requirements.

The following persons are excluded from participating:

  • The winners of 1st, 2nd or 3rd and We Are Water Foundation prize of the previous editions of this competition.
  • Employees of companies that form part of the Roca Group and their relatives up to 4th degree of consanguinity.
  • The winners of all the editions of the Roca’s international design contest jumpthegap®.

Logistics: At 9:30 a.m. on 5th October, the design topic will be announced live at the venue of the event. A printed copy will be given to all of the participants. In addition, the topic will be published at www.onedaydesignchallenge.net for those participants who choose to work remotely.

The design period for the competition will run from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The awards ceremony will be at 9:00 p.m. at both Galleries. All participants will submit their projects from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. via  www.onedaydesignchallenge.net.

Participants will find the project submission icon on the “SPAIN 2024” website mentioned above. Please note that when clicking on the submission icon, a new screen asking the participant to introduce the user and password generated when subscribing to the contest will appear. Only after having introduced such user and password, participants will be able to upload the documents of the project.

At 6:00 p.m., the jury, divided into two groups one in Roca Madrid Gallery, the other in Roca Barcelona Gallery, will deliberate in order to choose the winning projects of the Roca One Day Design Challenge Spain 12nd Edition. In this edition, the jury will select three winners from the participants registered in the Madrid Gallery and three winners from those registered in the Barcelona Gallery. The jury will also elect a first, second and third substitute winners just in case any of the awarded projects do not meet the conditions set out in these rules.

At 9 p.m., the jury will announce the list of the winners of the first, second and third prize and the award ceremony will take place at Roca Madrid Gallery (Calle de José Abascal, 57, 28003 Madrid) and Roca Barcelona Gallery (Carrer de Joan Güell, 211, 213, 08028 Barcelona).

The members of the jury will base their evaluations on the creativity and originality of the designs, as well as on their viability, while also giving credit for the clarity, legibility and graphic design of the presentations.

Due to the current climate situation and to the commitment of Roca One Day Design Challenge to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, all presented designs must take into account sustainability and the saving of water in order to aim for the prizes.

The first prize-winner will receive a prize of €1,500.

The second prize-winner will receive a prize of €1,000.

The third prize-winner will receive a prize of €500.

The Jury reserves its right to leave any of the said prizes unawarded if the project proves to be plagiarism or in any other way infringes the copyrights of third parties. The Jury also reserves its right to leave the said prizes unawarded if in their opinion none of the projects submitted to the present contest significantly adheres to the value of sustainability and/or has enough quality to deserve an award.

Once winners are communicated by email about their winner condition, the winners will have to prove the veracity of their date of birth and residence stated in the form when subscribing to the present contest by showing their ID or passport. In case the event organizers verify that either the age or residency requirements are not fulfilled, the winners will be automatically disqualified and the prize will be given to the next substitute.

All designs submitted to the competition will be exhibited at a show at Palo Alto Barcelona from 16th to 24th October 2024, inclusive. During the exhibition, attendees will be able to vote for their favorite design through a voting system to be determined by Roca Sanitario, S.A. The winning project will be announced at an event held at Palo Alto Barcelona on 24th October 2024.

Awards specified above shall be paid by transference to the award winners. The awards shall be paid in Euros. The award amount shall be taxed under the general rules of Spain.

In order to be eligible to receive the economic award corresponding to each position (first, second and third prizes), the awarded person (and in case of groups, at least one of the members of the awarded group) shall be present in the Award Ceremony (9.00 p.m. at Roca Madrid Gallery and Roca Barcelona Gallery) to collect the award.

If the awarded person (or at least one member of the awarded group) is not present during the Award Ceremony he/she (the group) will lose its right to the economic award but will maintain its condition of awarded person/group on the Roca One Day Design Challenge Spain 2023 12nd Edition.

If in any moment before the payment of the prizes the Organization detects that any of the awarded projects does not meet the conditions set out in these rules because it is not an original project or for any other reasons, the project affected by such circumstance will be disqualified and the following winners and substitute winners will upgrade one place in the winners’ classification. If any prize could not be awarded because there are no enough substitute winners, such prize will be declared as unawarded.

Presentation: To design the projects, participants can use any manual or digital 2D, 3D tool, scale model, photograph, collage, etc. However, the concepts must be described and illustrated on two horizontal A3 sheets or less.

The projects must be submitted to the website with the participant’s registration number, which can be found in the “Participants area” at the official Roca contest page.
The submission period for projects is from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on 5th October.

In order to submit a project, it is essential that participants have enrolled previously within the established period. Only one project may be submitted by each participant or group registered.

To guarantee the confidentiality of the participants, the real name of the individual or group participating should not appear on the A3 sheets submitted. The projects will be identified by the registration number.

Each participant or group should submit 2 digital files, which must comply with the following specifications without exception:

  • A horizontal PDF file with up to two A3 sheets which must contain: title of the project, image of the design, description in less than 150 words (minimum font size 24 pt), and no more than 1,500 Kb.

Example of .pdf file:

  •  A horizontal JPEG file with these specifications. title of the project, the most representative image of the project, and no more than 1,500 Kb.

 Example of .jpeg file:

 

  • The PDF and JPEG files should not take up more than 1,500 Kb each.
  • The name of both files should be the registration number only without any additional characters.
  • Although not mandatory, the registration number may also be included in the images of the project.

The projects must be presented in English.

Any entry that does not meet the above-mentioned requirements will not be evaluated by the jury.

Please note that the jury will only use the PDF document for evaluation purposes. The JPEG document will serve only for communication and divulgation purposes.

Other aspects: The spirit of this event strives to foster the participants’ creativity during the time over which the competition runs. As such, the projects submitted must be original and must not have been used previously for any other purpose.

The projects submitted must consist of a realistic object having a good design, which considers functional criteria and is consistent with the Topic of the competition announced by the Organization and feasible according to technologies existing at the date of the competition.

The Intellectual Property of the projects submitted belongs to their authors. However, the company Roca Sanitario S.A. shall have preferential rights for a period of 1 year to reach an agreement with any participant of the competition with respect to the rights to use the projects submitted.

By enrolling in this competition all participants (including the winner/s and finalists):

(I) assign to the companies that form part of the Roca Group, the reproduction, distribution and communication to the public rights over their projects submitted to the contest, for all countries in the world and for the maximum period permitted by law in each one of such countries for the next purposes: a. Promotion of their projects in publications of general interest and/or specialized magazines, as well as on the websites, editions and publications of Roca, and also on the contest website; and b. Project exhibition taking place at Palo Alto Barcelona from 16th to 24th October 2024.

(II) Roca Group will be entitled to assign to third parties, without the previous written consent of the authors, the right of reproduction and publication of the projects submitted by the authors to the contest for the territorial and temporal scope they deem necessary, for the sole and only purpose of promoting the authors projects worldwide; and

(III) authorise the companies that form part of the Roca Group to publish any images that may be taken of them during the course of the competition on any medium, whether in photographic or video format. This authorization is deemed to be granted for the entire world and for the maximum period of time authorized by law, but not shorter than twelve months.

Any issues or disputes that may arise in relation to the interpretation of these terms and conditions shall be settled by the jury in accordance with the provisions included therein. Any aspect that is not expressly covered in the terms and conditions shall be settled in line with the principles of fairness. The jury’s decision will be final.

The organization reserves the right to: (i) disqualify the participants and/or revoke the prize if the participants breach any of these terms and conditions or other rules and regulations of the Roca One Day Design Challenge or violate any applicable laws or regulations; (ii) amend or discontinue the Roca One Day Design Challenge and/or its terms and conditions, at its sole discretion without the requirement of giving any prior notice.

Roca, responsible for the organisation of the contest, shall not be liable: (i) for any cost incurred by the participants in participating in the Roca One Day Design Challenge; (ii) for any damage or loss caused as a result of cancellation / amendment of the Roca One Day Design Challenge, amendment or revocation of all or part of these terms and conditions, any act of God, governmental action or other force majeure circumstances (or any event beyond the control of Roca).

Roca, shall not be held liable for any damages, losses, or claims.

By enrolling in this competition, the contestants agree that their personal data will be included in a file owned by Roca Sanitario, S.A. (Spain) Avenida Diagonal 513, 08029 Barcelona - Spain which is responsible for processing this file, the purpose of which is to manage participation in the competition. The legal base for data processing is the contestants’ consent.

For any other purpose, the express consent of the candidates shall be required.

Participants may exercise their rights of information, access, rectification, erasure, opposition, restriction of processing, data portability and to avoid automated decision-making in writing to Roca Sanitario, S.A. Exercising the rights of erasure and opposition shall result in the participant’s registration in the competition being withdrawn, as the details are required for managing the participation in the event.
