17 / 10 / 2018
If you follow this journal, this means that you know about the One Day Design Challenge, but you might not know that Roca organizes another design contest, jumpthegap®. With a different format, jumpthegap® is biannual and it is currently celebrating its eighth edition.
This competition aims to offer architecture and design students and professionals under the age of 40 from all over the world a platform where they can showcase their talent by providing conceptual, sustainable and innovative solutions for the bathroom space of the future. Since its first edition in 2004, more than 20,600 designers and architects from 134 countries from all around the world have participated.
The 8th edition of the Roca International Design Contest jumpthegap® started at the Shchusev State Museum of Architecture in Moscow, Russia, on the 10th of October. The registration period of the contest will be open until the 27th March 2019 on the official website www.jumpthegap.net, where you can find the rules and regulations and all necessary information to register. The project submission period will be open until the 25th of April. By mid-June, the jury will choose the winner and the award ceremony will take place at the Disseny Hub Museum in Barcelona in October.
The contest has two categories:
Professional and Student, with a prize money of 10,000€ for each of them, and it also has a special sustainability award presented by the We Are Water Foundation of 6,000€.
One of the most important aspects of jumpthegap® is the quality and relevance of its jury, which is made up of renowned professionals of the architecture and design fields. In this edition, the jury is presided over by the Brazilian architect Ruy Ohtake and made up of Emilio Cabrero, director of Mexico City World Design Capital 2018 and of the Mexico Design Week; Murat Tabanlıoğlu, founder of Tabanlıoğlu Architects, professor, lecturer and curator; Boris Voskoboynikov, main architect of the studio VOX Architects and winner of numerous Russian and international awards; Carlo Ratti, architect, engineer, professor at MIT and co-founder of the design and innovation studio Ratti Associati; Dorota Koziara, designer, artist and curator; Josep Congost, director of the Roca Design Center; and Isabel Roig, general director of BCD (Barcelona Design Center) and former president of BEDA (Bureau of European Design Associations). For the We Are Water Foundation award, the members of the jury are Xavier Torras, director of the We Are Water Foundation; Deborah Seward, director of the United Nations Information Center and Low Cheaw Hwei, design manager for Philips in Asia.
Without the hurry and the pressure of the countdown of the One Day Design Challenge, this competition invites participants to reflect and ponder with more time and from their homes on possible scenarios and projects for the bathroom of the future, not feasible right now.
If you really enjoyed One Day Design Challenge, if you are a fan of competitions, if you spend all your time imagining new designs and applications, if you cannot stop drawing, jumpthegap® is a new opportunity to show your creativity and your more futuristic and innovative ideas.
