Introduction
For the third year in a row, Roca One Day Design Challenge was celebrated in Oman on November 2nd . The competition, which took place at the KR Infra Gala Campus in Muscat, challenged young designers and architects to explore their creativity.
The concept established as a premise for the participants in Oman was to redesign the basin for bathroom spaces in schools.
Out of all the submitted projects, ECHO from Abdullah Al Mandhari from the German University of Technology in Oman, was the winner, earning the prize of 600 OMR. The project consists of a sensor operated basin which contributes to significant water saving and improves hygiene and which is adjustable in height to adapt to different age groups. The attractive colorful round shaped design makes it fun to use for children. The jury members highlighted “The concept. To have innovative and attractive features to favor hygiene while reducing water consumption in schools¨
The second prize was awarded to THE SNAIL by Muzna Al Salmi and Fatma Sulaiman Al Nabhani, students at GUTech, valued at 400 OMR. The jury members highlighted “the design presented a practical solution to handling large volumes at the same time as well as being flexible for the different age groups while raising awareness regarding water consumption¨.
The third prize, valued at 200 OMR, was for TILTINK by Said Al Balushi from Orpic and Mohammed Al Kiyumi from Salikon because of "its highly practical and flexible, allowing for maximum hygiene and water saving”.
The We Are Water prize, valued at 200 OMR, was given to the most sustainable design to THE TREE OF LIFE by Zainab Jafri from MAF+Partners. They jury memers explaoned that "this design encourages the children to learn clean habits by integrating the re-use of water and hygiene in a fun and goal oriented way¨

Abdul Fattah Joudi
Abdul Fattah Joudi is the Chief Executive Officer of Lines & Visions, Associate and founder of the company in 2000.
Under his direction, the company has produced largely successful projects from inception through documentation and ultimately site supervision to ensure the successful completion of the projects. Apart from his invaluable input in the architectural design of all projects, his managerial responsibilities include operations, finances, business development and organization development as well as client relationships and studio vision.
Jumana Habib
Jumana Habib is leading Ibrahim Jaidah Architects & Engineers (IJAE) Office in Muscat, a subsidiary of Arab Engineering Bureau (AEB). As a Country Manager, Jumana is responsible for the day to day business, operational and technical delivery of IJAE’s projects in Oman.
Prior to joining IJAE, Jumana has held the position of the General Manager for Abu Dhabi Regional Head Quarter of Surbana International Consultants (SIC), a Singapore headquartered international multi-disciplinary and award-winning building consultancy firm who has transformed Singapore into a world ranked city.
Jumana graduated from the University of Auckland/New Zealand with an Honours degree in Architecture. With her multi-cultural background that blends an Arabic heritage with international academic training and project experience, she played an instrumental role in the start-up and development of SIC into one of largest international consultancies within the Middle East and Asia Pacific.
Jumana has a successful track record in providing strategic consultancy, business development and project management on significant client projects where ‘best in class’ results and performance have been non-negotiable.
Jumana’s key strengths lie in her leadership skills, Client and Interpersonal Relationship Management.
Shehla Hussain
Shehla Hussain (Assoc. AIA) has an experience of 10 years spanning Architecture, Urban Planning and Design Research, with an M. Arch from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
She has developed her design approach through the lens of research, community development and environmentally friendly design by means of her experiences with various organizations. Her Master’s thesis on Disaster Rehabilitative Housing in India explores practical guidelines on designing resilient and easily deployable reusable housing for displaced people. Her work was based on field research and her time working at the United Nations Development Programme, where she shared her research and assisted in developing design outlines for government stakeholders after the Tsunami of 2004. Her work was picked for publication and is available on amazon.com.
Since 2015, her work in Oman has focused on Urban Planning and Architecture at NORPLAN A/S, understanding land use patterns and futures in South Al Batinah. Her experiences led her to initiate “Oman Think Urban”, a non-profit group bringing together designers and urbanists to inform urban and regional spatial planning projects that have been growing in Oman. She hopes to use the platform to engage professionals and academicians, allowing them to examine design from the viewpoint of the inhabitants across the various regions of Oman.
Omar Nuri
SSH General Manager

Omar joined SSH in December 2009 to help run the then newly established Oman office and to assist in the successful delivery of major projects in Oman, such as Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre and the Royal Opera House Galleria.
In the following years, Omar led the project management function of the office overseeing all projects and was pivotal to winning many bids for the Oman business, such as the Omantel headquarters, Junoot Resort, and Ghala MUD. In 2016, Omar became the General Manager responsible for all office operations and achieving business targets.
Omar holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Architecture and is a certified PMP, Project Management Professional, from PMI since 2014.
Victor Schoone
Victor Schoone Msc Business Administration Erasmus University Rotterdam (Rotterdam School of Management) and CEMS Master ESADE Business School. Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands (1972), is the Country Manager for the Middle East region and surrounding countries since 2006 when he established the Roca Sanitario, S.A. Representation Office in Dubai, UAE.
Employed by Roca since 1998, his mission has been in the Middle East region to work towards achieving a leadership position for the Roca brand and pursue the recognition of the market of the key values defined by the Company: Sustainability, Innovation, Design, and Wellbeing.
